Happy end of the summer! – or is it? It seems that we are in for another hot spell October as I sit here in 80+ degrees and the heat can be seen rising from the Valley.
It has been an interesting summer and a long time since my last newsletter – apologies.
A recent spell of Rock Fantasy Camps and corporate events were particularly fun, in particular the Joe Satriani at the Louis J Martini winery event that we participated in.
This went under the banner of “Wine, Wisdom and Rock” and needless to say anyone who knows me knows that I am a big wine and food enthusiast. It was a fairly small camp with about 14 campers but the event itself was much larger and we met and made many new friends, including winemaker Mike and Jacque Martini, people from the Winery, from Gallo and from the local area.
Joe Satriani was phenomenal and was a real pleasure – I have been wanting to play with him for many years and this was a perfect opportunity. He flattered me by offering to learn one of my original tunes and so I selected “Tears of my Own Shame” – a song I wrote for Steve Lukather on his “Luke” album. Other counselors included old friends Teddy ZigZag, Vinny Appice, Bruce Kulick and Kane Roberts. I handled most of the vocal duties together with Teddy and we finished off the camp with a fantastic Saturday night outdoor concert.
We also had a corporate event for KIA motors with my longtime friend Vince Neil. You may recall that I wrote half of his first solo album “Exposed” We spent a day at the wonderful Hard Rock hotel in San Diego and surprised the KIA folks with Vince who came in at the start of the gig without them knowing who the guest was going to be. Together with Teddy, Bruce and Doors drummer Ty Dennis, Vince performed “Girls…” ” Home Sweet Home” and “Live Wire” and then Vince and I shared vocals on a couple of other songs including “Feels Like the First Time” It was a fun evening!
I was also very proud to be able to participate at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s 50th anniversary in a joint effort to raise money for the David Lynch Foundation. We managed to raise almost $150K to benefit the Foundation’s TM studies program. Performing that night and amongst others were Lamont Dozier, Micky Dolenz, Michael Des Barres, Nancy Sinatra and Al Jardine.
On the Big Noize front we found ourselves in South America doing shows with the current line up of Vinny Appice, George Lynch and Sebastian Bach. Playing our way through Chile, Peru and Brazil we rocked each of the concerts. I especially had a great time in Sao Paulo seeing my old friend and promoter Rogerio Guesso and spending time with more old friends from Peru that I had known since Richie Kotzen days. This line up of Big Noize will be performing a show in Trinidad on December the 7th.
On other news I started a new situation with two other songwriters and we are writing material for Millennium and Lionsgate films. I am pleased to say that I already got one of my songs in an upcoming Millenium movie.
On the Carnival of Dogs front we are still in the search for the right frontman/singer although I am getting to the point where I am sorely tempted to sing myself. The material is really good and this is proving to be a hard search. I always wanted a traditional “British” type band – a three piece with a front singer but after seeing my friends Richie Kotzen and Billy Sheehan in the Winery Dogs I am asking myself if that is really essential ?
Well that is it for the summer, once again please come down to Lucy’s 51 if you are in the area on Saturday the 19th October for the gig. It will be fun and there will be some surprise guests.
